News on ISO 45001

The meeting of the ISO/PC 283 has taken place in Vienna to work on the text of the DIS 2 (Draft International Standard) of the project of the future standard ISO 45001 of Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. The comments pending from the last international group meeting held in Lithuania were analysed, corresponding to the body and annex of the standard.

The DIS 2 vote is expected to open for comments in mid-May or June, and it will close in September. If approved, publication is expected at the end of 2017 or in 2018.

Organisations interested in implementing an Occupational health and safety management system will find the standard OHSAS 18001. This tool is already being used successfully by over 2,500 organisations certified by AENOR. By implementing it with the High Level Structure applied by ISO to its management systems (ISO 9001-2015, ISO 14001-2015, etc), migration to the ISO 45001 when it is published will be easier.

The future ISO 45001 is aimed at all organisations regardless of their size, type or nature. Its main objective is to safeguard worker wellness and well-being, as well as to provide safe and healthy workplaces.

The future standard will focus more clearly on the context of the organisation and will strengthen the role of senior management in the leadership of the Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
