UNE standards, effective fire safety

The 148 UNE standards listed in the new RIPCI (Regulations on Fire Protection Installations) are now published: standards on detection systems and fire alarms, water supplies, hydrant systems, hoses, couplings, fire extinguishers, equipped fire hose reels, sprinkler systems, water spray, water mist, smoke control and evacuation systems, road markings, etc.

These new RIPCI cover conditions and requirements that must be fulfilled by the fire protection equipment, systems and components; housing conditions and operation of the installation companies and collaborators; conditions for the installation, commissioning, minimum maintenance and periodic inspections of these installations and the penalty system.

The RIPCI is fundamental for efficient fire safety and it incorporates both the demands derived from the implementation of European legislation and regulation from sectors that were not studied, as well as products that were not found to have harmonised European standards.

Fire protection installations are currently governed by the Regulations of 5 November 1993, mentioned in the Fire Safety Regulations in industrial establishments (Royal Decree 2267/2004) as well as the Basic Safety Document in the event of fire of the Technical Building Code. The development in techniques and in the regulatory framework have made it mandatory to update and revise the requirements established in these Regulations, which are significantly based on standards in the UNE catalogue, mostly adopted from European standards, but also purely national regulatory developments establishing the design, installation and maintenance of fire safety systems.
