Approval granted for the draft of ISO 45001

2017-07-17

Approval has been granted for the second draft (DIS) of the future ISO Standard 45001.2:2017 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. Requirements and guidelines for use. The next step will be in September, when the work group will meet again to study the comments received and will decide whether the document will be published directly or there will be a final draft of the Standard (FDIS). Therefore, the standard is expected to be published at around the end of this year or in 2018.

The ISO 45001 will establish the requirements for implementing an Occupational Health and Safety Management System, thus committing to constant improvement. The future standard has been based on widely recognised references, such as OHSAS 18001.

The main advances include the strengthening of the senior management's role in leading the Occupational Health and Safety Management System, as a relevant part of its business strategy. Furthermore, more emphasis is placed on the context of the organisation and risk management; not only limited to the negative effect of uncertainty, but also to making good use of the whole set of circumstances that can improve performance.

Similarly it presents a high-level structure common to the most widely-used management documents in the world, such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

The standard, which can be applied voluntarily, is intended for organisations of any size, type and nature and can be certified by an independent third party. In the short term this will not result in the disappearance of OHSAS 18001, and certified organisations who want to adhere to this standard can undertake migration to ISO 45001.

The creation of the document is undertaken by 100 expert participants from 70 countries, including Spain, via UNE.
