Spanish Model for the Standardisation of Smart Cities

The Spanish Association for Standardisation - UNE, has presented in Paris the Spanish standardisation model for Smart Cities, as part of the smart cities meeting from the three European of Standardisation organisations: CEN, CENELEC and ETSI.

Standardisation is still a cornerstone of the new National Plan for Smart Territories (2017-2020), that gives continuity to the National Plan for Smart Cities (2015-2017), expanding the concept of city to all territories. Spain has an outstanding body of technical standards.

Twenty-three standards on smart cities have already been published, and the development of another ten is planned. These standards are formulated in the Technical Standardisation Committees (CTN) 178, created within UNE and initiated by the Secretaría de Estado para la Sociedad de la Información y Agenda Digital [Spanish Secretariat of State for the Information Society and the Digital Agenda] (SESIAD).

Spain is a global benchmark in the development of technical standards. In fact, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has approved two recommendations on smart city platforms and their interoperability requirements, based on the UNE Standard 178104.
