Environmental management of the process of design and development, Ecodesign

Sustainable management begins with design

To ecodesign is to identify, when a product/service is planned, all the environmental impacts that it can produce in each of the stages of its life cycle, in order to try to reduce them to the minimum, without having an adverse effect on quality and the product's applications.

AENOR's Ecodesign certificate demonstrates that the organisation has adopted a system of management to identify, monitor and constantly improve its products' and/or services' environmental aspects, providing information to its clients on products that have incorporated environmental improvements via their design, in accordance with the specifications of UNE-EN ISO 14006.

Internal benefits for your organisation:

  • It is a guarantee that the organisation complies with the environmental legislation that applies to it, including the legal environmental requirements referring to its products and/or services.
  • It guarantees that it manages the design and development of its products and/or services so that all of them undergo constant environmental improvements.
  • Cost reductions (consumption of materials, improvements to containers and packaging, etc.)

Benefits for your clients:

  • Innovation in product lines and therefore differentiation in the market.
  • Responding to clients' needs and expectations. For example, in bidding for tenders.
  • Improving the image of the product and of the organisation itself.

Related sectors

Ecodesign certification is applicable to all sectors where products and/or services are designed or redesigned. Currently, the sectors most likely to be interested are those affected by the European Union's Comprehensive Product Policy or those participating in bids for tenders who have to respond to environmental considerations included in the conditions. They include sectors such as products that use energy, the car industry, chemicals, furniture, building and architects' studios.

Possibility of obtaining comprehensive certification with

Ecodesign management systems can be audited together with UNE-EN ISO 9001 quality management systems and/or UNE-EN-ISO 14001 environmental management, since standard UNE-EN-ISO 14006 is complementary to these.

The experience acquired by companies in the sector that have already been certified under the UNE-EN ISO 9001 standard or the UNE-EN-ISO 14001 standard is very valuable for undertaking this new certification process and verification of Ecodesign requirements can be included as part of the audits for follow-up and renewal of these standards with the consequent saving in audit time and costs.

What clients obtain

Once the certification process has been passed, if the system implemented meets the requirements of Standard UNE-EN ISO 14006, your organisation shall obtain:

  • The AENOR Ecodesign Management Certificate.
  • The Management System Annex, which details the ecologically designed products of the certified organisation.
  • The license to use the AENOR Ecodesign.brand.
  • The AENOR Conformity Assessment Certificate.
  • The user licence of the AENOR Mark of ecological product design.
