Health and safety at work as a rule

ISO 45001: learn more about the latest updates.

Organisations of all types are becoming increasingly interested in achieving and demonstrating sound standards in Health and Safety at Work (HSW) by controlling risks, in keeping with their policy and HSW objectives. They do so against a background of increasingly demanding legislation, the development of economic policies and other measures to promote good HSW practices, and greater concern by parties interested in this matter.

OHSAS 18001 specifies requirements for a system to manage Health and Safety at Work (HSW), designed to allow an organisation to monitor HSW risks and improve its HSW performance.

Introducing and certifying a Health and Safety at Work Management System according to OHSAS requirements allows companies:

  • To reduce the work accident rate and to increase productivity by identifying, assessing and controlling the risks associated with each job, and eliminating factors that cause accidents and illnesses at work. The perception by workers of a safer environment leads to a reduction in illness, sick leave and absenteeism, higher productivity, a progressive decline in the accident rate and a reduction in sanctions and unnecessary expenses.
  • To comply with safety legislation, making it part of the organisation's methods and bringing about a reduction in the costs and administrative sanctions stemming from non-compliance, in addition to an improvement in the internal management of the organisation and in communication between the company and its employees, and the company and administrations and stakeholders.
  • To promote a culture of prevention via the inclusion of prevention in the general procedures of the company (required by law) and the commitment of all the employees to constant improvement in HSW standards.

AENOR's OHSAS 18001 Certification is thus the perfect tool to establish a suitable policy for health and safety at work in those companies which aspire to constant improvement.
